Stocks

What is a stock?

A stock, also known as a share or equity, is a partial ownership in a public corporation. Stock ownership entitles the holder to a portion of the company’s assets and profits proportional to the number of shares held to the number of shares outstanding. Stocks are predominantly bought and sold on stock exchanges and each country has its own exchanges or multiple exchanges. Corporations sell stocks to raise money for business operations or expansion. Historically, stocks outperform most other asset classes. Stocks can also grant their holders the right to vote on corporate changes, such as board members, and some stocks pay dividends to their holders, making them a source of passive income.

How to trade stocks?

Stocks can be bought and sold through stock brokers and some companies also have plans where individuals are able to purchase the stock directly from the company. There are also derivative products called contracts for difference (CFDs) whereby traders are able to speculate solely on the price changes in the underlying stock. Trading using CFDs does not convey any actual ownership of the underlying stock and has several benefits compared with actual stock ownership, such as the ability to go short the stock, or speculate on a declining price. CFDs are bought and sold through online CFD brokers, which may or may not be regulated by third-party entities.

Popular stocks

The universe of stocks is in the tens of thousands and range from large multi-national corporations that may be household names, to small regional companies that most people have never heard of. The most popular stocks are understandably those larger multi-national corporations. Chances are most of the products you use are sold by companies in which you could buy stocks. These include technology companies like Apple and Microsoft, ecommerce firms such as Amazon, energy companies like Royal Dutch Shell, or retailers such as Walmart and Target. Some of the most popular stocks in 2021 include Tesla, Walt Disney, Apple, Ford, and Sundial Growers.

Why trade stocks?

There are a number of reasons to trade stocks and each individual will have their own personal reasons for entering into the world of stock trading. The most obvious reason is to make gains and to potentially succeed and live comfortably from the gains they generated from their stock trading activities. Some traders simply love the excitement they get from buying and selling stocks. Others use stock trading to build a portfolio for their future retirement. Still others use them to diversify their portfolios which might also include bonds, commodities, currencies, and cryptocurrencies. Whatever the reason it’s important to understand that stock trading, like all financial trading, does contain an element of risk.

Benefits and Risks

Trading in stocks offers a number of benefits that can’t be denied. One is that traders are able to take advantage of economic growth and keep ahead of the inflation in the prices of the goods and services they regularly use and purchase. Another benefit is that stocks are undoubtedly the easiest market to participate in. Buying and selling stocks has been made incredibly easy in recent years as more and more people have gravitated towards making their own investing decisions. Because many stocks are extremely liquid there is little risk of getting trapped in a trade with the larger and more popular stocks. And trading stocks can allow you to benefit both from growth in the share price and the more passive dividend income that some traders prefer.

On the other side of the coin, there are risks involved in stock trading. These include the obvious risk that the stock you purchase could decline in value. Another risk is the amount of time it takes to research the stocks you are thinking of trading. You can’t just trade in any stock without knowing the financial standing of the company behind that stock. There’s also the intense competition faced by stock traders, who are going up against professional Wall Street firms manned by legions of professional stock traders.
